Ryan and Anji discuss the pro-meat protein bias on the new Discovery channel reality show, the Naked Castaway. The stranded castaway struggles to scavenge a handful of tiny sea snails and geckos to get his beloved protein, while almost ignoring the calorie rich plant based foods surrounding him that would provide more than sufficient protein, along with much needed carbs, fats, minerals, and vitamins. Like most Westerners, he’s convinced that protein is the nutrient source for bodily energy while also being clueless to the fact that plants, not just animals, provide ample protein.
Alright…go on then, what could he have eaten to essentially remove what he ate from his diet and still get a sufficient and well-rounded caloric intake?
for all but a handful of days, he was not getting sufficient calories. so yes, calories were a real problem. protein though, not even close to a problem. say that he couldn’t eat any meat for 60 days, there’s no way he’d develop a protein deficiency. that was the main point of our video. but he was getting protein from his little crabs and the taro. his fixation on a constant need for protein was totally unfounded.
